James Hargrave (son of Joseph Hargrave and Jane Melrose) was born November 19, 1800 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He is buried in St. James Cemetery, Toronto, Canada. In 1839 he married Letitia Mactavish of Argyllshire, Scotland, born in 1813 and died September 18, 1854. She is buried in St. James Toronto, Canada. She was a daughter of Dugald Mactavish of Dunardry, Scotland. James taught school in St. Remi, then he became chief factor in the Hudson Bay Company having been advanced because of merit. He settled in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, Two daughters and two sons were born to this union.1A third son, William Hargrave was born at York Factory December 10, 1842 and died December 27 – See “The Letters of Letitia Hargrave” p. 136.

James married again, Margaret Alcock, third daughter of Alexander Alcock the second son of Alexander Alcock, clergyman of St. Paul’s Chapel, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was of the family of Alcock of Wilton, Waterford County, Ireland, He was grandson of Thomas Alcock-Dean of Kilmaclvach. This family invented Alcock’s Porous Plaster. Thomas’ second wife, Barbara (daughter of John Yuill of Westove Orkney), was the mother of Alexander. James and Margaret had no children They were married in 1859 and she died in Edinburgh, Scotland June 5, 1899. She is burled in St. Nicholas’ Church Yard, Aberdeen, Scotland.
Mary Hargrave (daughter of Joseph Hargrave and Jane Melrose) was born in 1800 in Kelso, Roxburgshire, Scotland and died in [May] 1859.2June 1, 1859 She married [a contractor] James Ross (son of William Ross and Agnes Wilkie) who was born in 1793, in Scotland and died in 1846. Both are buried in the Protestant Cemetery,3Now the Ormstown Union Cemetery Quebec, Canada. Six sons and three daughters born [to] this union.
Jane Hargrave (daughter of Joseph Hargrave and Jane Melrose) was born in 1805 and died in 1892 in Madrid New York, U.S.A. She is buried at Beech Ridge, Quebec, Canada. She was not married.
