Joseph James Hargrave

Joseph James Hargrave (son of James Hargrave and Letitia Mactavish) was born in 1841 and died February 22, 1894. He was affiliated with the Hudson Bay Company but had severed his relations with it before sailing for Scotland, He was ill when he landed and died soon after. In 1871 he published a book “Red River” a memorial to the Earl of March’s hunting trip and residence in the valley of the Saskatchewan. The letters F.R.G.S. appear after his name in the book. At this time he was a resident of Fort Garry, Manitoba, Canada.

Letitia Lockhart Hargrave (daughter of James Hargrave and Letitia Mactavish) was born October 24, 1845 and died June 25, 1880. She married Frederick Schofield, a solicitor of Brockville, in 1864. He was born January 18, 1834. He lived (in his last years) in Rosslands, British Columbia, Canada. Both are burred in Brookville, Ontario, Canada. Three daughters and three sons were born to this union. [He died July 26, 1905]

Mary Jane Hargrave (daughter of James Hargrave and Letitia Mactavish) was born in 1848 and died December 28, 1873. She completed her education in Toronto,Canada. She married Alexander Ogston, a surgeon of Aberdeen, Scotland in 1867. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union.

Dugald John Hargrave (son of James Hargrave and Letitia Mactavish) was born October 8, 1850 and died December 8, 1854 at Sault de Ste. Marie, C.W. He is buried in St. James Cemetery, Toronto, Canada.

William Ross (son of Mary Hargrave and James Ross) was born March 5, 1824 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and died November 8, 1904. He married Isabella Bryson, third daughter of William Bryson and Janet Allan, on March 22, 1853. She was born September 2, 1828 and died January 7, 1921 at Dewittville, Quebec, Canada. Both are burled in the Protestant Cemetery, Ormstown, Quebec, Canada. Five sons and seven daughters were born to this union. [He was a farmer.]
