He is a Professor of English Literature at the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. Five daughters were born to this union

Francis Hargrave Ogston (son of Mary Jane Hargrave and Alexander Ogston) was born August 15, 1869 and was killed in action on April 17, 1901 as a Trooper Imperial Light Horse in Transvaal, South Africa.

Flora Mactavish Ogston (daughter of Mary Jane Hargrave and Alexander Ogston) was born April 1, 1871. She married on October 13, 1906 in Aberdeen, Scotland George Christopher Carter an architect in London who died November 6, 1907. He is buried in Coldstone Church Yard, Aberdeen Scotland. She was principal of Mumfermlein Training School and later private secretary to Mrs. Sydney Webb of London. No children were born to this union.

Walter Henry Ogston (son of Mary Jane Hargrave and Alexander Ogston) was born November 29, 1873. He married on December 16, 1909 Josephine Elizabeth Carter, youngest daughter of W. H. Carter of Shanghai, China. He is now a merchant in Bombay, India. One son was born to this union.
