• There is a Foucault’s pendulum in the Herzberg building (Physics) at Carleton University. Years ago I heard a story about the open space before the pendulum was installed and an industrial tub of silly putty. Apparently it bounced back about half way. What were they doing with an industrial tub or silly putty? Apparently they were doing early MRI type work and the putty was the same or close to the same density as human flesh. I've always wondered if the story was true and if so, if anyone else remembers the story.#Ottawa #CarletonUniversity #Physics
  • On Dolphin Turbulence Dolphins are such fast and agile swimmers that, naturally, scientists have long wanted to understand how they swim so well. A recent study draws on numerical simulation to analyze the flow a dolphin creates when flapping its tail. The resulting flow is highly turbulent–researchers were only able to simulate up to a fraction of a dolphin’s actual Reynolds number–with both large-scale vortices and a cascade of smaller ones. The largest vortices, shown here in white, form on the upper and lower surface of the dolphin’s tail, then slide off the tail in a vortex ring. It’s these vortex […]
  • RE: https://mastodon.social/@theperpetuallycurious8/115368885020490251Sharks do not simply float; they negotiate gravity with oil‑rich livers, cartilage, and lift from fins and tail 🌊🦈 A quiet choreography of physics and survival. Drift back to the earlier post if you would like to linger in the details. #Sharks #Physics #OceanScience #MarineBiology #TPC8
  • Content warning:On physics and mathematicsA person may have gathered from my frequent postings that I have an interest not only in the most fundamental topics of physics, which most treat as ‘settled’ (they actually were abandoned), but in mathematics. In particular, I always keep in mind that calculus and analysis is an abstract representation of action by direct contact. This is what the epsilon-delta definition of the limit represents. It is a mechanical activity made abstract…#physics
  • Content warning:Trying to improve on Special RelativityI have to draw some circles on paper or with a graphing program and actually do the calculations.I suspect what I need to do is draw circles that move with the antenna. THESE MIGHT BE THE ACTUAL RADIATION FROM THE ANTENNA. They expand radially at the speed c.Then I also need to draw the non-contentric circles described earlier. THESE MIGHT REPRESENT HYPOTHETICAL RADIATION FROM STATIONARY IMAGES OF THE ANTENNA.Find intersections…#physics

  • #paperOfTheDay is "Dirac traces and the Tutte polynomial" from 2025. A Fermion is a particle that is subject to the Pauli exclusion principle, namely at most one Fermion can occupy any one position at a given time. All constituents of matter, such as electrons or quarks, are Fermions. Mathematically, Fermions and their interactions are being described by certain matrices, the Dirac matrices (recall that for two matrices, A*B can be distinct from B*A, therefore matrices allow for effects such as flipping sign when being encountered in reverse direction). In calculations, one then encounters products of such Dirac matrices. In particular, […]
