Subject: Huntingdon QUE CAN. TANNAHILL

G’day all

I have recently been looking the ancestry of a John TANNAHILL, spouse of

Ann HENDERSON (alas no sign of this marriage).

They had the following children that I know of. All born Huntingdon QUE

CAN.

James Alexander 1866-03-12

Elizabeth Anne 1868-01-12

John Robert 1870-12-31

William George 1872-12-16

Robert Edward 1874-12-07

Mary Louisa 1877-04-21

Hugh Allan McGibbon 1879-01-11

Margaret Janet 1880-10-27

They were bapt at either at the Church of Scotland or Presbyterian

Church Huntingdon QUE.

It looks like from the 1851 census (transcripts kindly sent by a

Huntingdon researcher) of the area, John could have been one the

following four (4) :-

(1) John, born Canada, 5 y/o in the census therefore born c1846,

Most likely Son of Hugh TANNAHILL & Margaret MACK.

(2) John, born Scot., 8 y/o in the census therefore born c1843,

Most likely Son of Mathew TANNAHILL & Elizabeth CHAMBERS

(recorded as being born 1844-04-04 in Huntingdon parish records !)

(3) John, born Canada., 6 y/o in the census therefore born c1845,

Most likely Son of John TANNAHILL & Marion COBURN (sic) AKA CALDWELL

(4) John, born Canada, 8 y/o in the census therefore born c1843

Most likely son of William TANNAHILL & Jennet WHITE

Most of the ancestry of the above families is known, it is only a matter

of picking which John.

note:- he might be none of the above, Huntingdon seems to have been a

honeypot to different TANNAHILL families (to the anguish of some

TANNAHILL researchers of the area)

The only John that is in the index of Huntingdon baptisms/births I have

is no2 but the other 3 all have their siblings recorded there.

As I am going over to Salt Lake City, UT, USA shortly I will look into

it further.

Cheers

The Hargrave Correspondence

I ordered The Hargrave Correspondence, 1821-1843 and The Letters of Letitia Hargrave from Amazon on February 8. So far the order has been delayed twice and is now scheduled for shipping May 25 (“Usually ships in 3 to 4 weeks” – usually). Elsewhere, Greenwood Publishers claims to have the books in stock (ISBN: 0-8371-5062-0 and ISBN: 0-8371-5065-5), but on a belated check of the LSU library I found both of the books in the stacks. I should have looked there in the first place.

Note that The Letters of Letitia Hargrave are available on-line and the electronic documents are searchable with a very nice interface.

Madras College, St Andrews History

“Some letters from the 1840’s and 1850’s written by the English Master at Madras College, Mr Andrew Young, were recently discovered in the National Archives of Scotland. Remarkably they contained pages from the jotters of a young student, Joseph Hargrave, who was attending Madras College at that time and boarding with Mr Young and his family. Links to his arithmetic jotter pages may be found on our Mathematics Department Archive Index.

Young Joseph’s mother Letitia Hargrave at that time lived at York Factory (Manitoba’s oldest settlement in Western Canada) where his father James Hargrave was an important fur-trader. Some of his mother’s correspondence may be read at the Early Canadiana On-line Site. It makes fascinating reading. This archive even contains a Photograph of Joseph Hargrave taken when he was attending Madras College around 1850.”

HI JOANNE

Yes there were Ross descendants of James Ross and Mary Hargrave who went to

Benton Co, Indiana. Another branch of the Hargrave family went to Illinois.

I have some lists of who they were and how they were related but not much

other detail I’m afraid. I have copied this to two Ross descendants as

well.

>

> -Where is Medicine Hat????

Medicine Hat is in the SE corner of Alberta. It is on the TransCanada

Highway and the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway and straddles the

South Saskatchewan River. Established 1883, same year as James Hargrave

arrived.

The Hargrave family was very strong Presbyterian so that is generally where

I look (cemeteries, birth registries, etc.). These Rosses are definitely

tied in. The Hargrave family came from Kelso and Hawick in Roxburghshire on

the borders of Scotland. They had originally been English prior to 1645 but

were covenanters and so ended up taking refuge in Scotland.

I don’t know if this helps you with the Strachan family but you should not

get too hung up on the spelling because I think it was likely pronounced

more like Strawn back then. I have McRaes and McKenzies in my mother’s line

and for a while I was thrown off by MacRa and MacKennie spellings but in

fact that is how the names were pronounced in the 1850s. In Gaelic I don’t

think you pronounce a consonant which preceeds an H so Strachan would be

Stra’an although I don’t think it is necessarily a Gaelic name?

Thanks for this information. I will print and cross reference to the names

I have. If you want to see the families I have for that area, let me know.

Cheers
