|MIKE spectra may only be obtained from reversed geometry magnetic sector instruments. The magnet is used to select the precursor ion (MS1), which is then allowed to dissociate in the 2nd field-free region, i.e. the flight tube connecting magnetic and electrostatic sectors.
The fragment ions are analysed by the ESA according to their kinetic energy. MIKE spectrometry is an MS/MS method mainly used for gas phase ion chemistry. The kinetic energy release, KER, can be calculated for the dissociation process from the ion profiles.
