On the other hand, use of these symbols in non-commercial scientific writing is unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>The symbol &trade; designates a trademark and <sup>&reg;<\/sup> designates a federally registered trademark, for example DuPont&trade; Teflon<sup>&reg;<\/sup>, styrofoam<sup>&reg;<\/sup>, or adrenalin<sup>&reg;<\/sup>. Trademarks are used in commerce to distinguish unique products and protect intellectual property. In scientific writing, they aren&#8217;t necessary and most style guides recommend against their use. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ACS_style\">ACS Style<\/a> Guide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oup.com\/us\/samplechapters\/0841234620\/?view=usa\">instructs<\/a>: &#8220;do not use trademark (&trade;) and registered trademark (<sup>&reg;<\/sup>) symbols.\u201a\u00c4\u00f9 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amamanualofstyle.com\/oso\/public\/index.html\">AMA Style manual<\/a> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.samford.edu\/schools\/pharmacy\/dic\/amaquickref07.pdf\">recommends<\/a> omitting the symbol (but capitalizing the name). The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chicago-Manual-Style-16th\/dp\/0226104206\/\">Chicago Manual of Style<\/a> (p 446, see also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcwetboy.com\/mcwetlog\/2007\/10\/on_trademarks_and_trademark_symbols.php\">here<\/a>) says &#8220;Although the symbols <sup>&reg;<\/sup> and &trade; often accompany trademark names on product packaging and in promotional material, there is no legal requirement to use these symbols, and they should be omitted wherever possible.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK995\/\">NCBI Style Guide<\/a> recommends using the symbols (if known) only on their first occurrence, not on every use.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t use the symbols in scientific writing.
